Answering the Call for Higher Productivity

Carpenters Present Customized Education Session for The Beck Group

Answering the needs of our partners is a top priority for the Central South Carpenters. So, when The Beck Group – a partner with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters for many years – identified an opportunity to keep productivity at a high level for healthcare construction in occupied facilities, they turned to the Carpenters Union and the Central South Carpenters for support.

When working in an occupied healthcare facility, the level of complexity for the construction team can be demanding and specific training on proper infection control protocols is critical. Because the UBC has elite training programs specific to infection control, the Central South Carpenters created a customized familiarization program to outline for Beck the vast amount of training and support to leverage through their union partnership.

The ICRA training example

The Beck Group team came to the carpenters' North Texas Training Center to get hands-on familiarization with four crucial construction segments: ICRA (Infection Control Risk Assessment), digital print reading (featuring Procore, blue beam, and sketch-up), commercial door hardware, and flooring.

INSTALL – the International Standards & Training Alliance – is the UBC's floorcovering arm. It is an association of installers, contractors, manufacturers, associations and consultants from across the industry, all working together under the INSTALL umbrella to ensure union floorcovering is unmatched, especially in ICRA projects.

Why This Event Mattered

The Beck Group has long been a successful design-builder in the Dallas and Fort Worth markets. To evolve with changes within the construction landscape, the firm places a priority on increasing self-performing capabilities. The event educated superintendents and project managers on efficient strategies to self-perform ICRA and floorcovering work, two areas Beck's leadership identifies as market growth opportunities.

The INSTALL training example

We want to provide our carpenters with the best training and keep their skill levels at the highest possible level,” said Beck Regional Superintendent, Jim Thillen. “Partnering with the UBC and the Central South Carpenters is essential to achieving that goal, and we’re proud to partner with them now and into the future.”

Where We Go From Here

"We plan on hosting an event like this for Beck regularly to further assist them in training our members on whatever they need on a job site to keep productivity at a superior level," said Jason Engels, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Central South Carpenters. "This is a perfect example of how a partnership with the Carpenters Union is an asset that contractors can leverage to be highly competitive and profitable in their marketplace."

"We invite any of our partners to request a customized familiarization event such as this so that we can help them get the most out of their relationship with the carpenters union," Engels added.

Many thanks to the Gulf Coast Carpenters & Millwrights Training Trust Fund for creating the education stations and supplying their subject matter experts to guide Beck attendees through the event. They included Director of Carpenter Training David Barron, Austin Training Coordinator Bobby Vasquez, Arlington Training Coordinator Eric Kastner, and instructors Brian Spradley, Jason Adair, and Felix Regalado. Thanks also to INSTALL Director John McGrath and Central South Leaders Kavin Griffin and Shawn Walker for also hosting discussions and working closely with Beck guests to answer questions and present critical information.
