“Beat The Heat” Program Kicks Off Thanks to Volunteers from Local 551
7/30/2017

It can get a little hot in Texas in the summertime, but the Central South Carpenters and a local legislator worked together to bring some relief to those in need of beating the heat.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who represents the 18th District of Texas, coordinates a “Beat the Heat” program, where she helps senior citizens, veterans and the disabled in the greater Houston area who do not have air conditioning get a window unit installed.

The first installation for this summer recently completed, and was aided by five volunteers from the Central South Council’s Local 551: Kenneth Fontenot, Maria Robles, Elias Olague, Juan Lozano, and Charles Thomas.

“We have worked to ensure that the most vulnerable members of our community receive air conditioners,” Jackson Lee said.

“We should never risk the lives of seniors and children who are most at risk for health-related complications. With the senior population becoming increasingly diverse, these demographics will have profound impacts on the demand for social services, especially the need for adequate cooling. This is an opportunity to give back to those have given so much to the current and future generations.”
